In Ghana, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) requires pensioners to complete annual biometric verification via the SSNIT self-service portal, mobile app, or USSD code. However, Pensioners aged 72 years and above are required to physically visit an SSNIT branch for verification to continue receiving their pensions. While this prevents fraud, it poses significant challenges for many seniors, particularly those with health issues, mobility limitations, or who live in remote areas. Traveling to SSNIT offices can be costly, physically demanding, and time-consuming.
Missing the verification deadline leads to pension suspension, often the only source of income, causing financial hardship and stress. With Ghana’s 60+ population projected to reach 3.1 million by 2030, In 2023, SSNIT reported over 10,000 pension suspensions due to uncompleted verification. The problem is growing. A more accessible, community-based, and technology-driven solution is urgently needed
The AGE SSNIT Verification Support System aims to provide nationwide, community-based, and tech-enabled assistance to ensure that every senior citizen who is eligible can complete SSNIT verification without stress, risk, or unnecessary travel. This initiative will:
- Prevent pension suspensions
- Protect the economic security of senior citizens
- Reduce stress-related health risks
- Demonstrate AGE’s commitment to ageing with dignity
GOALS
- Facilitate SSNIT verification for at least 90% pensioners annually.
- Deploy trained Verification Assistants in all 16 regions.
- Collaborate with SSNIT to introduce community-based mobile verification points.
